Romance scams are affecting an increasing number of Norwegians
Romance scam is a type of fraud where scammers pretend to be romantically interested, then manipulate and exploit people emotionally and financially.
The scammer builds trust over time, often via social media or dating apps, and eventually asks for money for various purposes – such as medical emergencies, travel expenses or investments.
How to avoid romance scams
Be sceptical
Be on guard if someone you have never met asks for money
Don't let yourself be pressured
Scammers create a sense of urgency and emotional stress
Never share personal information
Never share BankID, passwords or account numbers
Seek advice
Ask family, friends or the bank before you transfer money
Ask questions
Is the story too good to be true?
Be aware of the language
Scammers often translate into Norwegian
What do you do if you have been scammed?
If you suspect that you are at risk of romance scams:
- End all contact with the person immediately.
- Do not send any more money, even if you are threatened or pressured.
- Contact DNB as quickly as possible – we can help you stop transactions and provide advice.
- Report the case to the police – this is important for investigation and prevention.
- Talk to someone you trust – fraud can be emotionally distressing, and it helps to share the experience.
