Get started with share trading

• Do you want to trade shares within the EU/EEA, for example on the Oslo Stock Exchange, and wish to defer tax while building up your savings? Choose a share savings account.

• Do you want to trade shares outside Europe, bonds, or other securities that are not permitted in the share savings account? Then you need an ordinary trading account.

Many combine both: a share savings account for Norwegian and European shares/funds, and an ordinary trading account for what falls outside.

You can open both account types after you have been granted access.

Share savings account: You can buy and sell within the account as often as you wish, without paying tax on each trade. You can withdraw the value of what you have deposited, as well as unused shielding deduction, tax-free.

Ordinary trading account: You pay tax on the gain as soon as you sell a share or a fund at a profit — regardless of whether you leave the money in the account or withdraw it.

Simply put, a VPS account is an account for holding securities, not money.

In addition to a VPS account, you must have a trading account, which is for money.

Anyone who wishes to buy or own securities registered with the Norwegian Central Securities Depository (VPS) must have a securities account (VPS account).
