Long-term sick leave and incapacitated for work
What happens to your finances if you become incapacitated for work? Falling ill and losing your ability to work can happen to anyone, and there may be a lot of new information to take in.
Get a complete overview of your policies
In the online bank, you can easily get an overview of your policies. You will find, among other things, policies you have through your current or previous employer, your personal insurance policies, and the cover you have on each of these.
When must I report that I am incapacitated for work?
If you have disability insurance privately or through your employer, you may have entitlements in the event of illness or an insurance claim. You may also have entitlements if you have critical illness cover and are diagnosed with one of the serious illnesses covered by the policy. It is important that you notify us yourself that you are ill.
We recommend that you contact us when your entitlement to payments from the insurance begins. For most disability insurance policies, this applies when sickness benefits from Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) cease after 12 months of sick leave, but some private insurance policies may provide entitlements after three months. There is no requirement for disability benefit to have been granted by Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) in order to receive any payments from the insurance.
Check if you have insurance through work
If you have suffered an insurance event or illness in connection with work, in addition to reporting the claim yourself, you should ask your employer to report the incident.
Employers will often send us notification of long-term sick employees if they have their pension scheme with us. In such cases, we contact the employee by SMS or letter.
How to apply for compensation in the event of illness
When your claim is approved
Even if your insurance claim is approved for payment, you are obliged to keep us updated about your situation.
It is important that you notify us of any changes that may affect your entitlement to continued disability payments.
This may include:
- New decisions on benefits from Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration)
- Change in your health condition
- Change in employment income or working hours
- Changes in the type of benefit you receive from Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration)
- Change in the number of children if you are entitled to children's benefit
- Commencement of education or retraining
- Your employment income exceeds the income threshold set by Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration)
If we do not receive updated information, this may result in payments being suspended.
If you receive disability benefit from Nav (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), you must notify us of any income that exceeds the income threshold.
You can keep us updated by filing a claim for personal insurance.
