How do I start a club or association?

1. Create an agreement and write the founding document

How do I found a club or association?
An association or club is founded by creating an agreement between the members.
This normally happens by summoning the members to a founding meeting, where the membership formally decides to found the association or club.

The founding document normally includes who attended the founding meeting, the date and location. Also include the formal decision to found an association with a specific purpose that the members wish to work for and the choice of a board.
Approve the articles of association of the association at the founding meeting. The founding document must be signed.
Within the Brønnøysund Register Centre’s website you can find templates for founding documents and articles of association.

2. Register the club or association at the Brønnøysund Register Centre

To register a club or association, you must send the Samordnet registermelding (coordinated register notification) to Altinn
Before you begin, you should ensure you have:
- Personal ID numbers of everyone that you will register with a role, for example a contact person or chairperson of the board.
- All necessary documents electronically available, for example, the articles of association, founding document or book of minutes from the annual meeting.
Tip! Give selected roles on the board the right of signature to act on behalf of the team or association (e.g. chairperson of the board and one board member).
When it is sent in, the register notification must be signed by everyone involved. Signing is done electronically via Altinn.
If the association has an accountant or auditor, they must also sign the form electronically.
And that’s it! The Brønnøysund Register Centre will now register you, so you get an organisation number. This normally takes between a few days and a couple of weeks.

3. Finished! You can now apply for a business account

Congratulations on your new association/club!
With your organisation number in place, you can now apply to become a corporate customer at DNB by clicking on ‘Start application’. Have a copy of your articles of association to hand.
Tip! Selected roles on the board that have the right of signature and are an authorised user must have an active BankID in order sign bank documents.

What are articles of association?

The articles of association for a club or association can be referred to as the laws and regulations that the members have agreed to follow.

The articles of association should include:

The association’s name
Municipality
Purpose
Rules for the association’s board and annual meeting
Rules for the members’ relationship to the association
Rules for articles of association changes, information that the association is non-stock (that no one can dispose of the association’s assets, claim a distribution of profits or be encumbered by debt)
